Thinking about picking up a Dell Mini 10
Looks like a cute little device to lug around and store notes on or whatever it is people do with these things… I want it to be able to run 1280p, however so i can use it as a media center when not mobile. so perhaps i shall have to wait for the next rendition of it with beefier specs
Custom Android build for HTC Hero
Haykuro of XDA-Developers fame has released more juicy stuff. The man has great sources that’s for sure. This time we have a short tutorial vid for the upcoming HTC Hero <– no idea what this device is even going to look like. This video shows off the custom HTC look and feel, and explains how to place widgets and shows what you can use them for.
Google Android boom is in the forecast!

some analytics company released a report saying they’re expecting a 900% boom in the android smartphone market this year. considering it’s already may, that’s pretty hefty. but then again android has only sold 1 million HTC Dream G1’s compared to the 21 million iPhones on the books for Apple, so while the catch up numbers may sound impressive, it will still be a while before we have a fair competition
in any case good news, methinks.
and here’s another video of the i7500 from samsung. (oooh 3.5 mm headphone jack!)
What the hell is Android Data?

so some guy makes a company in 2002 called “Android Data” and buys the trademark. then his company fails. so now come several years later, Google has made a successful mobile platform called Android, and this jackass wants money (of course). to the tune of 96 million dollars…
this is domain name camping all over again. it’s really about time we revise these systems so that conniving fucks can’t get rich off of doing nothing.
here’s an easy trademark system i came up with. if someone is found to be using a trademark YOU own, you can sue them but the limit of damages you can get are only what the name is worth to YOUR company. so if you just bought “Apple Computers” and sat on it for 10 years and then when the shit becomes popular you sue, you get NOTHING. if someone infringes and you HAVE been using the mark, and your company actually does have a presence then you get more, (because the person infringing would have known about your company if it wasn’t defunct). furthermore if you sue them, and they pay, then they can continue to use your trademark.
if you think through that, you can see how the more popular your brand is, the more valuable the trademark and the more prohibitive it is to infringe upon its copyright. but if your brand is completely worthless and you’re just name-squatting you’re not going to weasel any money out of anyone later on when someone else uses it and goes big.
China trucking along with biotechnology and stem cell research

China is leaps and bounds ahead of the US in biotech apparently. this article outlines the strides they’ve made in the field and how far we’re behind because of stupid religious ethical “consideration”.
case in point, Wolverine will probably be chinese when he comes out… is released… uhm… created.

Android army Form Up!

Hot on the tail of Samsung announcing their entry to the touchscreen smartphone market with the i7500, motorola is claiming to release an Android based smartphone as well. still very little details about what is planned, motorola is in kind of a slump at the moment and this could be a serious blow to the company if not executed well.
so 2009 is shaping up to be a good year for android adoption. HTC has announced 2 phones and another mystery device (possibly a tablet/netbook), samsung is going to release their i7500 probably during the summer, Acer and Motorola have hopped on the bandwagon to get their devices made. and HP is investigating the platform for their netbook offering.
if you are a developer and have been putting off research into this OS, i suggest you get the hell on before it takes off.
[Update] Wall street journal has Motorola dude saying they’re going to release in Q4 this year
[Update2] and wall street journal is completely homosexual when you try to link to their articles saying you have to subscribe to read them… so we’re just going to jack the relevant bit and put it on our own page. fuck you wall street journal. capitalist pig dogs.
“”We would look to do it closer to the launch,” Jha said, acknowledging that most companies typically provide earlier glimpses of their products to generate attention.
Jha said Motorola plans to have its phones available in the fourth quarter in time for the holiday shopping season.
Handset makers typically line up carrier partners before going public. But Motorola has yet to strike a deal, although Jha said conversations were ongoing with several parties. It’s more likely that it will get a commitment from a carrier in the fall, followed by the unveiling.”
Do you DisplayLink?
DisplayLink chipset allows display devices to run with merely a USB connection to your computer. the chip communicates with your CPU (main computer thingy) and your GPU (graphics card chip thingy) and does some magic compressing and decompressing the video and shooting it down the wire.
the great thing is, it allows you to easily connect up to 6 more displays to your system (as long as you aren’t running crazy 3D or HiDef Video on em as they use CPU processing to do their dirty work). As an added bonus it’s reported that they cut power consumption down by like 70-80%. oh delicious technology!
so i’m thinking about nabbing a display adapter for my new projector i got coming. can toss up a slideshow on the wall behind my desk and have like, wallpaper behind my displays instead of wallpaper behind my windows i got open. if that makes any sense
Toy Alert! My GP1 has been ordered!

I’ve waited a long time for this.
what’s so special about the GP1? it is an LED source projector with 100 lumen output (most throw 50 lumens so this is a great improvement) being LED it has a huge lamp-life (read: much better for projects that require a long duration use). Apart from that LED doesn’t produce nearly as much heat or consume as much power (no large internal fan creating noise).
and just to be super awesome, they threw in the ability to read a few video codec formats directly off USB. oh and how about dock your ipod on the sucker? no freaking problem, mon.
this little bad boy is crazy cool, and i’m all about throwing some dollars their way in hopes that the technology takes off. I’ll be eating ramen for a while, but i’ll do so watching Dexter on my LED projector.
HTC Magic launch hoopla

showing off the new android phone launching in about a week in Europe. seems okay, but i really would have condensed those buttons up and killed as much of that “chin” as possible.
for touchscreen phones i feel that the more you have that is JUST SCREEN the better overall the device is.
iunno maybe i’m just talking out my ass here.
Samsung i7500 first look
terrible showing, but hey it’s something, right?
still no word on whether or not this thing sports a compass or accelerometer. but the lack of trackball is confirmed. icky D-pad
